Agnes Glasheen Obituary

Agnes M. Glasheen (nee McDonnell), of Allendale, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 26, 2021, at the age of 84.  Agnes was predeceased by her husband, John, in 1980.  Her family takes solace in knowing they are finally reunited after 40 years apart.

Agnes was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, sister-in-law and friend. The daughter of Irish immigrants Francis McDonnell (Killarney Co. Kerry) and Katherine McDonnell (nee O’Connell CastleIsland, Co. Kerry). Agnes is survived by sons Jack, Matthew and Kenneth; daughters-in-law Janine, Dolores and Patricia; grandchildren Julianne, Kenneth Jr., Justina, Jacqueline Glasheen, Lauren Allen, grandson-in-law Matthew Allen; treasured cousins, sisters-in-law and friends.  The births of and being around her grandchildren gave Agnes especially great joy.

Agnes was a proud Bronx native who attended St. Joseph’s School and Aquinas High School. She had a happy childhood and adolescence in the Bronx with many summers in Rockaway Beach, Queens.  Agnes and John enjoyed life with her family in the Bronx; she worked at the FBI before starting a family.  After her boys were in school, she proudly worked for Parkchester Management Co. for 25 years. She moved to Allendale, NJ in 2013.

Agnes embraced her Irish culture and especially loved Irish music.  She was particularly happy to have visited with her many relatives in Ireland.  Her last visit was particularly joyful, accompanied by her immediate family in celebration of her 70th birthday.  They shared a small castle in Killarney National Park where they hosted large extended family reunion dinner parties, and oh what parties they were!  Agnes was a famously prolific reader, especially, the mystery genre.  Star Trek and NASCAR racing were favorite hobbies, and she enjoyed attending Star Trek conventions and an occasional race. Scrabble was her favorite board game and she was often a proud and gracious winner!  Did you know she was also a writer?  She often wrote clever, amusing poems to commemorate special occasions to everyone’s delight. Agnes especially relished family gatherings.

Due to the current health restrictions, an immediate family Funeral Mass will be held at Guardian Angel Church in Allendale, NJ at 10:45 am on Wednesday, February 3rd. A visitation will be held prior to the mass, beginning at 9:45am. We understand many would wish to pay their respects, but we sincerely appreciate respect of the limitation on in-person attendance. The service will be livestreamed for on-line viewing, however, via the Guardian Angel Church website. Please click here to watch the funeral service. Following this service will be her burial at St. Raymond’s Cemetery 2600 Lafayette Ave., Bronx, NY. For those attending the Funeral Mass and burial, we ask that masks be worn and social distancing protocols be adhered to. At a later date, once health restrictions are lifted, a celebration of Agnes’ life will be held for her friends and family to attend.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Agnes may do so by donating to the Valley Hospital Foundation, specifically their effort to help fight COVID–19.  Please go to the following link: Dave Bohan Covid 19 Message - Valley Hospital Foundation.

With her left hand extended in the universal Vulcan sign, Agnes would signal to all, “Live Long and Prosper.”

Thank you,

The Glasheen Family
