On September 29, 1959, Mary and Sylvester deVere were blessed with the arrival of their second of three children, Ann Renee. She is lovingly referred to as Renee by her family. Born in NYC, Ann received her early education in upstate New York. She graduated from Woodlands High School in Greenburgh, NY and then attended college at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn where she received a Bachelor of Architecture degree.
Ann held several jobs in her academic field while preparing herself for the work she loved best, that of a “teaching artist.” She taught sketching, painting, design and printmaking among other art related activities. Her students were of all ages from children in elementary schools to the elderly in senior programs. She taught at Wave Hill, the Henry Street Settlement, the High Line and other places in NYC. Her creative energy and enthusiasm for teaching art were evident to her students and colleagues.
After a battle with cancer, Ann succumbed to the illness on July 18, 2023. She is survived by her father (Sylvester), brother (Leonard), sister (Ellen Denise) as well as her nephew, Michael (Tia) and niece, Tara (Michael), grand-niece, Sage and grand-nephew, Saint Michael, in addition to a host of uncles, aunts and cousins.
