Elizabeth M. Johnsen, 90 years of age, 65-year resident of Ramsey, NJ, passed away Wednesday, March 31, 2021.

Born on August 11, 1930 to parents Marguerite and Ernest Burgoyne. Survived by her devoted husband Roy H. Johnsen of 66 years of marriage. Predeceased by her elder sister Barbara Huntington-Giarrocco and her younger sister Lucille Ionno. Known to friends and family as “Betty” and to her loved husband as “Lizzie”. She grew up in Hillsdale, NJ and graduated from Park Ridge High School in 1948. Then in 1951 graduated from Royal Victoria Hospital School of Nursing in Montreal, Canada. Her nursing career spanned over 30 years and considered to be her “calling”. She was the head nurse of Urology at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.

Betty is quoted by her lifelong friends as saying “Why fret about tomorrow when today is so sweet”. She was creative as a writer and a poet starting at a young age. She was caring, free spirited, witty and a spit fire always keeping you on your toes. Her nursing classmates described her as adventurous in wanting to do things she never had done before, which later in life she explored her dreams and adventures with her family.  She knew how to take charge and get things done, always helping others.

Life member of the of the Ramsey Ambulance Corps, active member of the Lutheran Church of Redeemer for 62 years, member of Sons of Norway Norrona Lodge #467 and the Ramsey Branch of Valley Hospital Auxiliary. Betty loved to play bridge and traveled the world with her beloved husband Roy. Her highlights of her life were her memories of summers spent at their cabin in Vermont of 30 years with her family.

Loving mother to 4 children Barbara Johnsen Soued of Ballston Spa, NY, Steven of Doe Hill, VA, Ernest Johansen and his wife Mona of Ocean, NJ and Bruce and his wife Eva of North Pomfret, VT. Survived by her adored six grandchildren Erica Soued, Jeremy, Jason, Jesse, Jake, and Benjamin Johnsen. Predeceased by her grandson Derek Soued and son-in-law Jeffrey Soued.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 8th from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at the Lutheran Church of Redeemer on 55 Wyckoff Ave, Ramsey, NJ. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, April 9th at 10:00 am at the Lutheran Church of Redeemer in Ramsey with the Rev. Dr. Michael C. Linderman officiating. Interment will follow at Redeemer Cemetery, 90 Chapel Rd, Mahwah, NJ. Arrangements are being handled by the Van Emburgh-Sneider-Pernice Funeral Home in Ramsey.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation be made in Elizabeth’s memory to the Ramsey Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Attn: Donations 41 S.
