Gaetano "Guy" Cappello Obituary

Guy J. Cappello, 97, of Wyckoff NJ passed away on Father’s Day, June 16, 2024.

Gaetano “Guy” was born on June 29,1926 in Brooklyn, N.Y. to John and Frances Cappello.  He was the third child, having two older sisters, Frances and Violet. He attended Manhattan High School of Aviation and then went on to Stevens Institute of Technology where he embarked on a career in mechanical engineering.

He enjoyed and appreciated life so much and each day was filled with enthusiasm and an amazing positive attitude.  He was a treasured friend to many; a kind, caring, inclusive and supportive man who dedicated himself to helping others. His spirit will live on in all who knew and loved him.

He had a valued and successful career with Con Edison of New York until he retired. But then, retirement was not in his sight, where along with his loving wife he owned Carvel of Garfield where he brought laughter and smiles to all his customers over many years of ice cream, special occasions and holidays. There was never a family celebration where Fudgie the Whale or Cookie Puss was not a guest.

His interests were many and varied, but his love of golf continued until age 97 where he enjoyed the comradeship and lasting friendships of so many.

He loved his home and garden in Wyckoff and took such joy and pleasure in doing his owngardening and riding his tractor right up until recently, as well as driving his SUV to the golf course.

He built model airplanes and loved to fly them;his collection is still on display at his home. Along with his loving wife Helen, he adored spending winters in Hillsboro Beach, Florida, where he continued to savor many friendships and to enjoy the weather and play more golf.

A member of Wyckoff Activities Unlimited, he cultivated many friends and treasured their company with golf, meetings, shared birthdays and lunches.

His 95th birthday was a big party where family members and many friends came together in Guy’s backyard under a large tent to celebrate.

However, his love of family was his prime focus.  He cherished his beloved wife Helen, his children and most especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren who he adored.  He was always so interested in and proud of them, cheering them on as their biggest supporter. Spending time with them and attending their performances and sports activities, was the highlight of his life. He had an unbreakable connection with them which was unique, unwavering and mutual to this day.

He is survived by his loving and caring daughter, Denise Gannalo of New Canaan Ct, his devoted son Guy R. Cappello and wife Maria of Mahwah NJ, his 6 grandchildren, Kristen, David, John, Jeremy, Alexis and Gianna and his 2 great grandchildren, Jack and Sam.

His heart was broken by the early passing of his son John at the young age of 18 in a car accident and there was never a day that passed that he did not think or speak lovingly of John. He was further saddened by the early passing of his son Robert due to an illness.

We will carry the wonderful memories of Guy’sexemplary life in our hearts always.
