Succasunna, NJ - Carl George Dohrmann passed away peacefully on February 1, 2025, at the age of 91. He was born on June 21, 1933, in Brooklyn, NY, to the late Carl and Winnie Dohrmann.
George graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School before enlisting in the Navy in 1952. He was a proud “Tin Can Sailor” assigned to the Destroyer U.S.S. Rowe out of Norfolk, VA, whose initial mission was to support combat operations in North Korea. He was a radar operator, a relatively new technology at the time, and circumnavigated the world over his 4 years of service. He had fond memories of many ports including Guam, the Philippines, Japan, the UK, Sweden and both the Panama and Suez Canals.
After an honorable discharge, George met Mary Carol McMahon, also of Brooklyn, whom he remained married to for 65 years until her passing a year ago (almost to the day). He also began work as a draftsman for Bell Laboratories and moved to California for several years before returning to New Jersey to start a family. He simultaneously enrolled at Rutgers University earning his bachelor's degree, mostly at night, with 4 young children in tow.
He worked in various roles for the same Telecommunications business for over 40 years as it evolved into AT&T and Lucent Technologies in offices across northern NJ. Upon retirement, he worked part time and volunteered for Hope House Catholic Charities in Dover, NJ.
George was a longtime resident of Succasunna, NJ. He enjoyed coaching his children and holding leadership positions with Roxbury Township Athletics. He was a member of the Roxbury Roamers Camping Group, where friendships formed while visiting America’s great outdoors with his family.
George was immensely proud of his grandchildren and marveled about their successes and appreciated their wanderlust. We also remember George for his love of current events and politics, often reading multiple newspapers cover to cover, and immersing himself daily in cable news. He loved the New York Yankees, baseball hats, “Reesie” the cat, and his pickup truck.
The final years of his life found him at the Veterans Home in Paramus, NJ, where he was able to form friendships with fellow military men and women while being well taken care of by their capable staff. His final days were made easier by the Valley Hospital Hospice Care who deserve recognition.
George is survived by his daughters Laura Dohrmann and Gigi Vaccaro and her husband Mark, his granddaughter Maggie, his daughter Jennifer Dohrmann, his son Terry Dohrmann, his wife Tracy (née Polizzi), his grandchildren Mia, Abby, Grace, William and Riley. He is also survived by his brother John Dohrmann and was blessed with many nieces, nephews, and beloved grand-pets.
George will be buried in the Veterans Cemetery in Sparta, NJ - date pending, the family will update accordingly.
