Giovanni (John) Rocco Mastrocola

Giovanni (John) Rocco Mastrocola, 90, of Ramsey, NJ, died peacefully at his home on April 7, 2026. He was born in Orsogna, Italy, in 1935, the son of Rocco and Maria Mastrocola. 

At 15, he played soccer professionally for teams in Roma and Pescara, Italy. After immigrating to the U.S. at 18, Giovanni attended Hofstra University, where he played soccer and was named to the All-MAC Conference in 1961 and 1964. He graduated from Hofstra with a degree in organic chemistry and became a perfumer at Fritzsche, Dodge and Olcott. He later served as perfumer and director of research at Roure Bertrand Dupont before rising to vice president and chief perfumer at Ungerer & Company, a position that allowed him to combine his creativity with his love of mentoring young perfumers.

Giovanni was also an avid tennis player and relished trading cheeky volleys on weekend mornings with his wife of 55 years, Irena. But as he grew older, nothing made him happier than spending time with his cherished granddaughter Isabelle, with whom he shared a passion for soccer—especially the beauty of a perfectly arching free kick.

He will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to family, his unstinting support of Italy’s Serie A underdogs (Go Atalanta!) and his love for the perfect cup of coffee.

Giovanni leaves behind his devoted family, including his wife, Irena Mastrocola; children John and Kristina Mastrocola; daughter-in-law Michelle; and granddaughter Isabelle. He is also survived by his sister, Maria Iervolino; nieces Gloriann Iervolino and Carla Berger; Carla's husband, Matthew Berger; and their children, Samuel and Emily.
