Jeannine Floyd (nee Fontaine), 92, on May 8, 2025 of Upper Saddle River. Beloved wife of the late Herbert Floyd. Loving mother of Suzanne Floyd and André Floyd and wife Kim. Cherished grandmother of Jarrett and fiancée Stephanie. Dear sister of Monique, Gilles, and the late Pauline, Roger, Girard, Bertrand, Suzanne, Fernand, Denise, Laurier, Jean-Luc. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Jeannine grew up in Lac-Megantic, PQ. As a girl, she played hockey with her brothers and sisters in the winter and other winter sports, and enjoyed swimming in Lac Megantic and volleyball with them in the summer. She attended primary and secondary school locally before heading to Montreal for nursing school.
After receiving her nursing diploma from the Hôpital Notre Dame nursing program at the Université de Montréal in 1954, she moved to New York City to start her career at Cornell Medical Center, continuing at the Visiting Nurse Service of New York.
After a brief return to nursing in Montréal, she returned to Cornell Medical Center where she met Herb. They married in 1960, moved to New Jersey, and started their family. The young Floyd family moved to Upper Saddle River in 1965, a time when there was a local strawberry farm to pick your own berries every June. The area also featured a substantial sledding hill, very much enjoyed by all. A very hands-on mother, she guided André and Suzanne through 12 years of school, was a member of the USR Ambulance Corps, and eventually restarted her career as a visiting nurse with the Visiting Nurse Service of Ridgewood, NJ., retiring in the late 1990’s.
She continued to enjoy skiing with her family on afternoons and weekends at Campgaw Mountain while they were small, and then chaperoned the Upper Saddle River recreational ski trips for middle schoolers as they grew. There were many family trips to Canada to visit with her parents, brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews, with swimming in the summer and skiing, skating, and snowmobiling in the winter. Jeannine helped lead Suzanne’s brownie troop and enjoyed guiding arts and crafts projects at home.
A devoted member of the Church of the Presentation, after Herb’s passing in 2000, Jeannine became a dedicated member and eventual leader of the church’s bereavement group, which generated many long-term friendships. Regular Rummikub games with local friends were her favorite pastime outside church activities.
Visitation will be held on Monday from 3 - 5 PM & 7 - 9 PM at Van Emburgh-Sneider-Pernice Funeral Home, 109 Darlington Ave, Ramsey. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 13, 2025 at 10 AM at Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River. (Everyone please meet at Church) Cremation will be private.
