The Honorable John Joseph Langan Jr., 78, of Allendale, New Jersey, passed away on December 30th, 2025 surrounded by his family and friends.
John was born on August 1st, 1947 to Rosemary (Earley) and John Langan Sr. in Kearny, New Jersey. He graduated from Queen of Peace High School, later receiving his undergraduate degree in history from Fairfield University in 1969 and Juris Doctor from Fordham Law in 1972.
John began his legal career serving as counsel for the Bergen County Board of Freeholders and as Bergen County Adjuster. He acted as an attorney for over 30 municipalities throughout his career, entering private practice in 1979. John was an associate at DeCotiis, FitzPatrick, Cole & Wisler from 1986 to 2005 before being appointed to the Superior Court of the State of New Jersey (Bergen County) until 2017 and continued serving as a recall judge until the day he passed. A lifelong advocate of mental health, John proudly worked with CarePlus and the West-Bergen Mental Health Center for decades.
John’s love of sports was well known. In addition to his avid spectatorship of local and collegiate games, John excelled at basketball, football, track and rugby throughout his own high school and collegiate career. He remained a proud alumnus of the Fairfield Rugby team and the Fairfield Football club, of which he was a founding member.
His legacy lives on through his wife, Dr. Anne McDonald Langan and their three children, Mary, Johnny, and Jimmy. He is survived by his sister Noreen Muller, her husband Richard and their sons Jeffery (Kari) and Stephen (Katie); his brother Terence Langan, his wife Carol and their children John (Kelly) and Ashlie; and his brothers-in-law John (Zoe) and Timothy (Debbie) McDonald and his extended family. John is predeceased by his parents, sister Marianne Kuhlthau, brother-in-law Peyton, and brother-in-law Richard McDonald.
