Joseph Boscarino Obituary

Dr. Joseph A. Boscarino (Joe) passed away on January 20th, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Joe was born in Paterson and was the son of the late George Boscarino, Sr. and Rose Boscarino and the identical twin brother of the late John Boscarino and the brother of the late George Boscarino, Jr. Joseph is survived by his wife, Carolyn Boscarino, five children: Karen Bohlin and family, Kathy Boscarino and family, David Boscarino and family, Joseph J. Boscarino, and Andrew Boscarino. Joe was a graduate of Passaic Valley High School, Fordham University (BA in Sociology/Psychology), New York University (MA in Criminology, PhD in Social Psychology), and University of California Berkeley (MPH in Epidemiology). He completed two post-doctoral fellowships at the Yale/New Haven Veteran Affairs Medical Center and University of California San Francisco. A life with many paths, Joe served in the Vietnam War, ran a research company, was an adjunct professor at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Temple University School of Medicine, a professor at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, and a prolific researcher. He worked primarily as an epidemiologist with research on topics including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), addiction, hepatitis C, and other clinical areas. Joe’s research pursuits were fundamentally formed by his experiences serving in the war and his desire to help fellow veterans. He published over 200 peer-reviewed articles with more than 11,000 citations. In 2009, he was elected to Fellow Status by the American Psychological Association (APA) for psychological trauma research and was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS) for his World Trade Center Disaster and veterans' research in 2010. Able to quote military history off the top of his head, Joe was a beloved husband and father, avid runner, and voracious reader whose irreverent wit, passion, and limitless intelligence will be greatly missed by his family.
