Kathleen M. (Kay) Cummins, of Mahwah, NJ passed away peacefully on May 14, 2022, in Ocean Township, NJ, at the age of 82. She was born on January 7, 1940 in New York City to Michael and Kitty O’Connell, and was raised in the Kingsbridge section of The Bronx. She attended grade school at St. John’s and graduated from Sacred Heart of Mary HS in 1958. After achieving one of the highest grades in NYC in the entrance exam for nursing school, she attended and graduated from the nursing school at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Manhattan, where she graduated with an RN degree and then worked as a nurse. ln 1961, Kay married James P. Cummins and they eventually settled in Mahwah, NJ where they raised their six children. Kay and Jim were married for 52 wonderful years until Jim’s passing in 2013. After raising their children, Kay and Jim had a retirement rich in family and friends and split time between their homes in Mahwah and Vero Beach, Florida.
Kay is survived by her six children and their spouses, including Laura Cummins, Jerry and his wife Sally, Chris and his wife Sherry Bishko, Kathy and her husband Rodger Van Allen, Nancy and her husband Robert Walsh, and Kevin and his wife Diane, 16 grandchildren, her sister Debbie Haug and her husband John, her sister-in-law Betty Byrne and Kay’s nieces and nephews. Kay was a selfless person whose life-long priority was her family. She was a parishioner of lmmaculate Heart of Mary Church in Mahwah and strongly believed in the value of a Catholic education. She also was a committed fan of the New York Yankees and enjoyed spending time in her later years with Tito, a slightly overweight pug dog.
Visitation will be held on Monday, May 16 from 4-7 PM at Van Emburgh-Sneider-Pernice Funeral Home,109 Darlington Ave, Ramsey, NJ. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 17, 2022 at 10 AM at lmmaculate Heart of Mary Church in Mahwah, NJ. lnterment will immediately follow at Maryrest Cemetery in Mahwah.
