Maura Anne McGowan, on October 26, 2023, of Ellicott City, MD surrounded by her loving family, passed away peacefully after a long illness. A beloved wife, mother, daughter and sister. Maura was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan on December 19, 1963, and grew up in Mahwah, NJ as one of a loving family of five brothers and sisters. She was a graduate of Immaculate Heart Academy and St. Bonaventure University. After graduation from St. Bonaventure, she worked 36 years for the Federal Communications Commission as a telecommunications analyst, retiring December 2022.
Maura loved social gatherings and especially loved vacations with her entire family in Lake Placid, NY. An avid skier, she traveled across the U.S. and the world skiing with friends and family.
Along with her husband Tim, she raised two beautiful children, Kate and Brendan. Nothing was more important to her than her children. She also loved coaching Kate’s soccer and basketball teams.
Maura had a boundless compassion for those less fortunate or marginalized. She understood that each of us needs and deserves love, compassion, and at times a helping hand. She lived by those principles. While a member of her local church’s parish council, she successfully lobbied the council and pastor to adopt a needy parish in Haiti. The parish was chosen after traveling to Haiti and visiting numerous parishes, finding one with the greatest need. She also started the family’s weekend practice of feeding the homeless in Baltimore with members of her parish. It became a regular weekend event for the family, instilling valuable principles in her children.
Maura is survived by her two children, Kate and Brendan, husband Tim Maguire, father Francis, brother Stephen (wife Cindy), brother Michael (wife Marissa), sister Kristen Powers (husband Dennis), brother Matthew (wife Sarah), and ten nieces and nephews. Maura is predeceased by her loving mother Helen.
The last months of Mauras life were blessed with a steady stream of visits from loving siblings, cousins and friends. During those months Maura inspired us all with her grace, strength and humor.
