Nancy (Barrett) Walsh

Nancy J. Walsh (7/4/30 – 3/24/26) Nancy J. Walsh (née Barrett), 95, of Ramsey, and long-time resident of Mahwah, passed away on March 24, 2026.

Nancy was born in the Bronx, New York, and was a graduate of St. Barnabas High School and Fordham University. She was named the “Ideal Barnabite” at her high school–denoting the balanced, scholarly, and spiritual qualities that made her so admired by family and friends alike. One of the only women to graduate from Fordham’s business program at the time, Nancy was an exceptional student, possessed a prodigious vocabulary, and remained curious and intellectually engaged throughout her life. Always the avid reader, she met her future husband, James A. Walsh, when she bought textbooks from him during her undergraduate career.

She is survived by her children, Jeanne (Mark) Tyler, Kathleen Walsh, Michael (Kim) Walsh, and Erin (Greg) George, as well as son-in-law Bruce Bird. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Jeffrey and Patrick Bird; Christopher and Daniel (Daniela) Tyler; Matthew, Amelia and Ryan Walsh; Alessandra and Ian George. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews, including Christine Walsh, who was so devoted to her in the last few years of her life.

Nancy was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 57 years, James A., daughter Nancy Bird, and son Thomas.

A cherished daughter, cousin, wife, mother, grandmother, and godmother, Nancy stewarded generations of her family for nearly a century with grace and resilience. Some of her favorite memories involved time spent traveling with them, often along the coasts: Long Beach Island, NJ, St. Augustine, FL, and Cape Neddick, ME. In addition to her immense charm, she had a real knack for healthy competition: playing bridge, tennis, and golf well into her later years; faithfully completing The New York Times crossword puzzle every day; and always keeping up to date with the latest in Jeopardy! and Yankees baseball.

A long-time parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church, Mahwah, NJ, Nancy was a member of the Rosary Altar Society, and the ICAPS. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, Mahwah, NJ on Wednesday, April 1, 2026 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice.
