Nicholas Evangelos Makris, 104, of Upper Saddle River, NJ, passed away peacefully at his home on September 4, 2023 surrounded by family.
After immigrating from Greece to the United States, Nicholas served for his country starting in August 1942 thru December 1945 as a member of General Patton’s 3rd Army in WWII —achieving the rank of Infantry Squad Leader & Staff Sergeant. He was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery.
Nicholas married the love of his life, Zoe, in 1952. The couple was happily married for 65 years until Zoe’s death in 2018. Nicholas is survived by his four children: Maria Alexiades (Andrew), Phyllis Rucker (John), Angelo Makris (Tamara), and James Makris (Tena)— as well as his ten grandchildren who he adored: Zoe Rucker, Nickita Alexiades, Evangeline Makris, Alexandra Rucker, Nicholas Rucker, Nicolette Makris, Nicholas A. Makris, Ava Makris, Nicholas J. Makris, and James Makris. His memory will forever hold a blessing in our hearts.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4 - 7 PM at Van Emburgh-Sneider-Pernice Funeral Home, 109 Darlington Ave., Ramsey, NJ. A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 8, 2023 at 11:30 AM at Saint Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church, 51 Paramus Rd., Paramus, NJ. Interment will follow at George Washington Memorial Park, 234 Paramus Rd., Paramus, NJ.
