Thomas Hayes Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of Thomas (Tom) Hayes on January 9, 2025, at the age of 65. He was surrounded by his loving wife, Victoria (Vicky), and two treasured children, TJ and Justine.  He leaves behind a legacy of love, endless laughter, and cherished memories that will forever remain in the hearts of everyone who knew him.

Tom was born on April 27, 1959 in Englewood, NJ.  His family moved to Royden Road in Tenafly, NJ in 1963 where he would later meet Vicky Scocozza, “the girl next door”. They became best friends, always playing in the cul-de-sac, and later dating in high school.  After both graduating college, Tom and Vicky married in 1985, and together raised two wonderful children, TJ and Justine, who brought them immense pride and joy.  They were blessed to share 39 beautiful years of marriage together as husband and wife.

Tom graduated from Tenafly High School in 1977 alongside Vicky.  Together, they shared not only their high school years but also a close-knit group of lifelong friends who have remained an important part of their lives.  After high school, Tom went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts in Communications from the University of Miami.

In 1982 he began his distinguished career in networking and infrastructure engineering at Ticketron, where he met his lifelong friend, Phil. Tom’s professional journey continued in 1991 with The Shubert Organization, followed by roles at Merrill Lynch and ultimately at OppenheimerFunds, as Vice President and Director of Infrastructure Engineering, from 1995 to 2015. During his time at OppenheimerFunds, Tom made a lasting impact, most notably in the aftermath of 9/11. In the hours following the tragedy, he created a National VPN network to ensure business continuity and built a disaster recovery site, allowing the firm to resume trading within 20 hours. His remarkable efforts earned him the Spiro Award, the company’s highest recognition.

After retiring in 2017, Tom never truly slowed down. He continued to stay active, whether helping neighbors with yard work or assisting with the renovation of his daughter’s home. In 2024, feeling called to return to the workforce, Tom took a job at Home Depot, where he found joy and formed new friendships. He looked forward to going to work every day, always eager to help others in any way he could.

Tom was a diehard NY Jets fan, and his Sundays were often spent sharing his passion for the game with his son, TJ. The two would watch football together, a cherished tradition that brought them closer each week. Outside of football, Tom had a deep appreciation for music. Whether it was rock ‘n roll or country music, you always knew Tom was close when you heard his tunes drifting by.

Tom was the epitome of generosity, kindness, and selflessness. He had a remarkable ability to make everyone around him smile, offering words of wisdom and a helping hand whenever needed. His warmth and love for others knew no bounds.

In addition to his wife and children, Tom is survived by his uncle, David Wehr and countless cousins and extended family.  He is predeceased by his mother, Lilian Wehr, father, William C. Hayes and brother, William A. Hayes.

Tom’s legacy of love, laughter and unwavering support will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
