Virginia Fleming Obituary

Virginia Kathleen Fleming, formerly of Ramsey and Mahwah, NJ passed away on March 16, 2022. She was born August 1, 1937 in Columbus, OH, one of six children born to D. Bruce Mills and Kathleen Mills (nee Lyons). She grew up on the family farm on the Ohio River in Marietta, OH. Virginia graduated from Marietta High School, Marietta, OH and attended Ohio State University. In 1957 Virginia married and after stops in Muncie, IN and Upper Saddle River, she eventually landed in Ramsey in 1964 where she raised her three children, Lorie, James, and Kevin.  In 1982 Virginia moved to Mahwah. A lifelong Parishioner of St. Paul Roman Catholic Church in Ramsey, Virginia’s faith was extremely important to her throughout her life and she enjoyed serving as a Eucharistic Minister, as well as and traveling to Medjugorje, Bosnia. In 1971 Virginia began her successful career in Real Estate in Northwest Bergen County, a Career which would span more than 40 years. After rising to Broker/Manager for multiple Real Estate Agencies, she finished out her career as a Broker Emeritus agent for Coldwell Banker in Allendale, NJ.

Virginia had many interests that she was passionate about, most of which were rooted in her rural farm upbringing. What were initially essential skills needed on the farm became lifelong pleasurable activities. Baking.  All manors of Cakes, Cookies, & Deserts, many of which were Family Recipes handed down from her mother and grandmother. It seemed she had recipes for every holiday, and every day in between.  Sewing and making Dresses, which became very useful when she pursued another passion, Singing.  She was a Member and Past President of the Ramapo Valley Chapter of Sweet Adelines Chorus in the 60’s and 70’s, performing at locals such as Carnegie Hall and The Royal Albert Hall in London. She sewed many of the Gowns and Costumes, not only for herself, but for many members of the chorus as well. Virginia also devoted an incredible amount of time for the absolute Love of Her Life…..Gardening & Flower Arranging. Virginia was passionate about Her Flower Gardens at home and Flower Arranging, especially at St. Paul’s Church in Ramsey, where for many years Virginia took pride in contributing to the creation of the Holiday Altar arrangements. She was also a longtime member of the Wyckoff Garden Club, serving a term as President.

Virginia was predeceased by her parents and by sisters Maryann Mitchell and Merecedes (Jill) Simoncelli, brothers Marion and Charles Mills. She is survived by her children Lorie & Tom Shortman of Mahwah, NJ, James M. Jones Jr. of Hewitt, NJ, and former wife Cathleen Martin of Mahwah, Kevin and MaryAnne Jones of Ramsey, NJ., Grandchildren Marisa, Marshall, Maureen, and Sarah, Ryan, Emily, & Amanda, Great Grandchildren Christian Catalina, Reilly and Luna.
