William Mallaney Obituary

William Joseph Mallaney, 98, of Paramus, NJ was called back to the Lord, on May 5, 2022. He was born on March 24, 1924, to William P. and Kathryn Mallaney of White Plains, New York. William, known as Bill, graduated from White Plains High School, and immediately joined the United States Army, 10th Mountain division in response to World War II. He trained in several military bases and in 1942, was shipped overseas to Italy to serve the war effort under General Mark Clark. Within two years he became a sergeant and led a small group of soldiers in that conflict. At the end of the war, he was flown back to Staten Island, where he served an additional nine months. In 1946, he returned home to White Plains and began his career in the retail shoe business. Shortly thereafter, he met his future wife, Priscilla and they were married in November of 1950. Bill and Priscilla enjoyed their early years with their three sons. In 1960, Bill was transferred to and opened up a new store in a new project known as the Garden State Plaza. With this transfer, Bill moved his family to Maywood, New Jersey, where they spent many years with new friends, watching their children grow, and making yearly trips to Long Beach Island. In 1969, Bill was offered an opportunity to open up two retail shoe stores by the Stenchever family in a new project, the Willowbrook Mall. He managed both stores, a woman’s/children’s shoe store and a Florscheim men’s store until the early 1980’s when one of the stores was sold by the original owners. Bill stayed on as manager of the men’s shoe store until 1986, when Bill and Priscilla semi-retired and moved to Long Beach Island where they lived for ten years. He continued to work part-time in the retail shoe business and made great improvements to his golf game. In 1997 to be closer to their grandson, they moved to Ramsey, New Jersey. Bill eventually became a Eucharistic minister and volunteered weekly to distribute communion at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood as well as doing other volunteer work there. In 2014, upon the death of his wife, he moved to the Care One at the Cupola in Paramus, New Jersey where he again made new friends and enjoyed his golden years.  During his lifetime, Bill served others and he was true to his Catholic faith. Bill is predeceased by his wife, and his youngest son, James Patrick. He is survived by his two older sons, Thomas Michael and his wife Linda, and William G. and his wife Barbara, and his grandson, Thomas Joseph.
