Yoko Hines Obituary

Yoko Ninomiya-Hines, age 78, passed away peacefully on December 4, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family at the Villa Marie Claire in Saddle River, New Jersey, following a brave and dignified journey with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Born on March 11, 1947, in the serene prefecture of Ehime on Shikoku Island, Japan, Yoko’s life was a testament to determination, resilience, generosity, and quiet strength. Her story began in a place of natural beauty and tradition, and from those roots she carried forward a spirit that touched everyone she met.

As a young woman, Yoko made the courageous decision to move to the United States—drawn not only by opportunity, but by her deep love for Western music, especially the Beatles. Their melodies became a lifelong source of joy, comfort, and expression. Songs such as Let It Be, Blackbird, We Can Work It Out, Hey Jude, and I Want to Hold Your Handfilled the air and shaped the soundtrack of her life. Friends and family will forever remember her humming along with a subtle, joyful dance, waving both fingers in the air with unmistakable charm and contentment.

Yoko’s career spanned several decades in Japanese restaurants across Manhattan and New Jersey. Her hospitality, grace, and work ethic left a lasting impression on colleagues and customers alike. She served as a cultural bridge—embodying kindness, humility, and a gentle spirit that transcended language and background. People did not simply meet Yoko; they felt welcomed by her.

Yoko was a devoted mother to her two children, Timothy Hines and Jacklyn Nasr. Her role as a mother was defined by unwavering love and dedication—traits that shaped every step of her children’s lives. Yoko then met the love of her life, Andrew McGill, with whom she shared more than40 years of partnership. The love between them was something special, something sacred. It was the kind of love and devotion found in storybooks and fairy tales—enduring, wholehearted, and profoundly tender. She extended that same warmth to her cherished grandchildren—Kaitlyn, Daniel, and Isabella—each of whom brought her immense joy in her later years.

Yoko also found great peace in nature. Whether outdoors or listening to her favorite music, she embraced life’s simple pleasures and found beauty in small, quiet moments.

Those who knew her best describe her as loving, generous, selfless, and endlessly compassionate. Yoko possessed a unique ability to make others feel seen, valued, and cared for. Her kindness extended far beyond her immediate circle, touching countless lives with her graciousness and gentle spirit.

Yoko is survived by her devoted husband, Andrew McGill; her loving children, Timothy and Jacklyn; her caring daughter-in-law, Carla; her supportive son-in-law, Iskander; and her adored grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Daniel, and Isabella. Each carries forward a piece of her indomitable spirit—her tenderness, her resilience, her warmth, and her instinctive generosity.

As the sun sets on Yoko’s earthly journey, her family and friends take comfort in the memories she created and the lessons she imparted through her graceful, humble life. Though she will be deeply missed, her spirit continues to live on in every act of kindness inspired by her example.

In keeping with Yoko’s values and the quiet, intimate way she lived her life, her family will honor her memory forever preserving the closeness she always cherished.

In lieu of sending flowers, the family kindly asks that you consider donating to organizations supporting Alzheimer’s and dementia research, or to your local ASPCA. Yoko had a profound love for animals of all kinds and frequently donated to groups that cared for those in need. Contributing in her honor is a meaningful way to celebrate her compassion, generosity, and the causes she held close to her heart.

Yoko’s life reminds us that the simplest acts of love often have the greatest impact. Her legacy of compassion, empathy, and selflessness will forever remain in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.

Blackbird singing in the dead of night,

Take these broken wings and learn to fly.

All your life…You were only waiting for this moment to arise.

“Blackbird” by The Beatles
